Hearing Summer

Summer song birds announcing the morning
Old hymns sung by old friends
A fan gently clacking as it spins in the heat
Ice clinking in a glass dripping with condensation
Cicadas buzzing in the trees
The splitting of a wonderfully ripe watermelon
The crash of a summer afternoon thunderstorm
“Do Your Ears Hang Low?” megaphoning from the neighborhood ice cream truck
The rush of an evening downpour
Crickets announcing nightfall
The crack of a wooden bat in the night
Fireworks exploding in the dark
